Tis the season to be at the mall and viciously bombarded by a perfume girl or handed a FREE sample of lip gloss! Most of us try on clothing and jewelry before we buy them too. All of these may be more than you bargained for and perfect settings for a case of Contact Dermatitis.
This form of rash can be an acute or chronic inflammation and can develope anywhere on the body. It's basically an allergic reaction to a substances that has come in contact with the skin. Chemical irritants such as detergents and dyes are two of the more common culprits. Nickel in jewelry is another and even some plants have caused some extreme cases of Contact Dermatitis.
Contact Dermatitis is characterized by itchy, red bumps that are usually hot to the touch. This area will be swollen and irritated until it runs it's course for several days or even weeks. Always see a doctor to be properly diagnosed if you develop any type of rash.
Whether you have sensitive skin or not, be sure to test a very small area when sampling perfumes and cosmetics. They contain numerous chemicals that may trigger a reaction you weren't planning on getting this holiday season. A perfume will change the way it smells after coming in contact with your body. So, if you like a perfume on someone else and get it home only to find it doesn't smell the same on you, . . . now you know why! This is one of the reasons the sample girls (or guys) use paper strips now. It allows the perfume to be at it's natural state.
SkinJunkie perfume safety tip; NEVER wear perfume or cologne directly on your skin. A small "spritz" on your outer garment is efficient, TRUST ME! Wearing it directly on your skin can cause other skin conditions like Poikiloderma of Civatte. This is when the chemicals in perfumes interact with excessive sun exposure on your skin, causing a permanent blotchy, discoloration on your epidermis. If you researched some of the chemicals in the products you wear neat on your skin, you'd be more likely to agree with my suggestion.
Wishing you healthy, happy skin.
