What's YOUR skin type?

In general, there are five category skin types and they are based on the amount of sebum you produce. What's sebum you ask? Well, it's a complex mixture of fatty substances that keep your skin soft, supple and pliable. We want this! It also serves as a protective barrier to prevent bacteria from invading our skin. You should view sebum as one of our many tiny (but powerful) Super Heroes within our body!

Drum roll please, . . . . . . the five skin "types" include;

1.Normal 2.Dry 3.Oily 4.Combination 5.Mature/Aging

Let me break these down for you so you may do a self evaluation. Knowing your skin type will help you to choose the appropriate products if your not one of my oh so lucky clients! Yes, occasionally I must verbally stroke myself. No harm done. Moving on, . . .

Normal- well this type is quite rare indeed so if your one of the more fortunate individuals, which I like to refer to you as a "lucky bitch" (yes, the men too) then your skin contains sufficient moisture and sebum production. You almost never get breakouts or clogged areas. Your pores are wee so small to medium in size throughout your T-zone area. And most likely your friends envy you like a prisoner would envy a home cooked meal or a king size bed!

Dry- sadly, you are lacking adequate sebum production and exhibit heightened sensitivity. This may be caused by smoking, worshiping the sun or fake baking, lack of water consumption, other health conditions/disorders and even improper product use. Your prone to fine lines & wrinkles and your skin appears thin and delicate. I'm not talking "good" delicate like a newborn baby either!

Oily- here you have to take the good with the bad. Oily skin displays excess sebum production and the appearance is thick & shiny. Your pores are usually larger and prone to breakouts & clogged areas. BUT your less likely to display fine lines and wrinkles. It's a trade off, really!

Combination- this is the most common skin type I see in my spa cabin. You display areas that are both dry and oily. Your T-zone area most likely displays larger pores than the rest of your face. Using the appropriate products will easily get this combination skin type under control. Also, pay attention to the area that is prone to breakout. You may just have a bad habit of touching your face (chin, forehead or nose) while talking. Though this is a nervous habit, you may be causing your own breakouts by adding a dash of bacteria here and there! Once you become aware of it, your chances increase to STOP it!

Mature/Aging- it freaken happens to the best of them! Yes, them and NOT ME! Well, not yet for as LONG as I can help it! Ok, so your getting older or just aging faster than the rest of us for many reasons. Your skin displays loose (I hate that word), thin (usually a good word but not when I'm talking skin), crepe-like appearance. You have, heh hemm, "fine lines and wrinkles" and your skin lacks elasticity and firmness. The natural aging process results in increased dryness but when you've done this to yourself by an overindulgent lifestyle, sun exposure, the environment and/or smoking, . . . well then, you have earned every wrinkle baby! You may as well name them and give em' Birthdays cuz there here to stay unless you have money saved up for a new face! Overindulgent is not in moderation! This brings me to my knees when I see a beautiful person that has "ignored" all the reasons to stop smoking, stop tanning, stop drinking too much, or even stop pretending your invincible! Your not! No one is and one day it will catch up to you and sadly it will be slapped across your face for everyone to see!

Remember, your skin type can change with age and hormones. Be sure to stop using a product if it's not working for you or creating new issues, even if you did pay good money for it. Take it back or throw it away. You'll know a good product, it improves the appearance of your skin in just a few short uses. Also, more expensive does NOT mean better quality!

We deal with consequences to our mistakes on a regular basis but when it comes to our skin, it's worse! We have to wear our consequences on display, the first thing everyone looks at. We only have one body, one face, one mind. Getting all of them on the same page is crucial to looking and feeling good!

Please know, I write this to educate, encourage and to motivate any person who has the desire to improve their skin and way of life. I do it out of LOVE! I promise! The love I feel when I get a compliment on my skin, the love of getting I.D.'d at the party store, the love of a 25 year old boy that hits on me thinking I'm his age (aww their so cute but it's not happening), the love of sharing what I know with others that may not know. Skin is my passion and knowing that sharing my love for our Integumentary System may get you closer to a better image looking back at you in the mirror is PRICELESS! Sharing is caring ; ] Hence the blog baby!

  1. Bon tardi! Thanks for sharing this info. I've always been blessed with great skin. I've never had problem...even after Cancer. I've always been able to work with my complexion.

    Lately, I've been eating better and drinking more water. I can honestly state that it's been helping a great deal.

    Hope you're having a great week.
